Description:

The service, run by Brotherhood Community Nexus, helps organise respite care for older carers of people with a disability in Melbourne’s Southern Region, including the Mornington Peninsula.
The Respite and Life Options service helps older carers who care for a son or daughter with a disability by facilitating community opportunities, interesting activities, and help with planning for the person’s future.
Everyone needs a break, and while parents and other carers are taking time out to pursue their own interests etc., their loved ones are taking part in social activities and making new friends.
This can include helping the person with a disability to develop independent living skills, to gain community connections and develop a circle of friends.

“What will happen when I’m gone?” Parents and other family members who care for a relative with a disability often worry about the future. The Respite and Life Options service can help families to plan ahead, connect carers with support groups and help families to develop a strategy in case of an emergency.
Respite and Life Options can also help carers and people with a disability which can include talking to friends and family members about how they can support the person with a disability when their carer is no longer able to.
